DVD cover, teaser poster and final poster analysis

Horror film posters

I like this film poster because it manages to convey a simple yet clear idea – that of someone being shut out of a house and trying to get in - using only the film’s title and one picture, a girl banging on a window/door, which complement each other very effectively. It also conveys the genre effectively, as the shadowy picture and the idea of someone trying to get into a house suggest horror. The white text contrasts with the black background and the image of the girl in shadow, creating a starkly minimalistic image.

I do not like this film poster because it presents the horror/slasher theme in a gratuitous, indiscriminate way, showing bloodstains, a hangman’s noose, and a knife with a frightened woman reflected on the blade, which seems to me to be trying to cram in too many things. The caption is a fairly generic horror tagline and the poster seems quite crudely juxtaposed with the lighthearted-sounding title. The text is written in red, presumably to suggest blood. Overall it seems quite generic and has nothing in particular to distinguish it from any other slasher film.

DVD cover and disk image 12/02/01

This is the DVD cover for my film America: Story Of A Nation. I made the front cover using pictures of the Statue of Liberty, some skyscrapers, the American flag, and a cheeseburger. The skyscrapers are lower towards the centre of the image, which draws the viewer's attention towards the centre. A similar effect is used with the base of the Statue of Liberty. I made the back cover using the stripes from the American flag and some official Presidential pictures.

This is the DVD disk image for the same film. I used the metallic effect on the text so it would stand out against the background. I used the same Presidential pictures but this time in a curved line, so it would adhere to the edge of the DVD and would also be reminiscent of Mount Rushmore. Like in the DVD cover, I was trying to present as overwhelmingly American an image as possible.

DVD cover 5/02/10

I looked at a variety of DVD covers and found 2 that I liked (Carlito's Way and Le Pere Noel Est Une Ordure). I then sketched a design for a DVD cover of my own for a film called 'America: Story Of A Nation' and began creating a high-quality cover and DVD image in Photoshop. To the left is the image that will be on the front cover. I created it by putting pictures of the Statue of Liberty, a miscellaneous skyscraper, and the American flag together, as these are all things associated with America and this conveys the idea that the film is about America.
